Spain’s Ministry of Infrastructure has submitted proposals to re-consider the ‘Tren de la Costa’, an infrastructure investment project for the Costa Blanca which was shelved in response to the economic crisis in 2007/8.
Costs for the new network, which would operate between Valencia and Alicante, have been reduced from €1.3billion to €955million.
The plans split the project into four key stages, with a number of new stations and high-speed sections being built: Stage 1 links Gandia to Oliva; Stage 2 connects Oliva to Dénia; Stage 3, considered perhaps the most exciting part of the programme, provides a route from El Altet to Benidorm via Alicante, including a connection to Alicante-Elche airport; and Stage 4 is an upgrade of the existing line between Dénia and Benidorm.
If approved, the project is expected to bring considerable benefits to the Coast Blanca region.
